Vitamin D and its importance for dental and general health

Vitamin D, also known as the „sunshine vitamin”, plays a central role in the health of the human body. It is particularly important for bone metabolism and the immune system, but its importance for dental health is often underestimated. In this report, we would like to tell you why vitamin D is also important for your oral health.

How vitamin D works in the body

Vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the intestines and ensures that these minerals are stored in the bones and teeth. Adequate vitamin D levels directly contribute to the stability and strength of bones. This includes the jaw bones, which are crucial for anchoring the teeth.

Effects of vitamin D deficiency

A vitamin D deficiency can have serious consequences for your general health, including:

  • Bone loss (osteoporosis): Due to the lack of calcium absorption, the bone becomes porous and brittle, which can also affect the stability of the teeth.
  • Tooth loss: A weakened jawbone can cause teeth to lose their support and become loose.
  • Risk of periodontitis: Studies show that vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of gum disease, such as periodontitis. Vitamin D has anti-inflammatory properties and helps the body fight infection.
  • Vitamin D may reduce cancer growth and mortality, including colon cancer.
  • Healthy levels of vitamin D reduce the likelihood of heart attack.
  • Vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for several autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, and diabetes mellitus.
  • Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to brain disorders, dementia and Parkinson's disease.
  • Unfulfilled desire to have children: Good vitamin D levels are beneficial for pregnancy and child development.
  • Being overweight: Vitamin D is stored in body fat, making it unavailable for metabolism.
  • Feeling weak? Vitamin D is involved in several metabolic processes and influences muscle performance.
  • Are you prone to forgetfulness and/or mood swings? Adequate vitamin D is essential for brain function.

Vitamin D and tooth decay:

Vitamin D also plays a role in preventing tooth decay. Healthy levels of vitamin D support the mineralization of tooth enamel, which acts as a natural barrier against tooth decay. Children who get enough vitamin D as they grow have stronger teeth and are less likely to get cavities.

How is vitamin D made?

The human body can produce vitamin D, but only when the skin is exposed to sufficient sunlight. In our latitudes, it is often difficult to get enough sunlight, especially during the winter months. There are also small amounts of vitamin D in foods such as fish, eggs, and fortified dairy products, but this is generally not enough to meet the daily requirement.

How do you know if you have vitamin D deficiency?

Vitamin D deficiency is often not immediately obvious because the signs are not very specific. These include fatigue, muscle weakness and frequent infections. A blood test at our clinic can provide clarity.

Recommendation for patients

To optimize your vitamin D levels and support your dental health, we recommend the following:

  • Sun exposure: Try to get at least 15 to 30 minutes of sun exposure each day, preferably during the middle of the day when UV rays are most intense.
  • Diet: Eat a balanced diet that includes foods rich in vitamin D.
  • Supplements: If you have a deficiency, vitamin D supplements may help stabilize levels. Talk to us or your doctor about this.

Vitamin K2 and magnesium are considered the most important supplements to support the effects of vitamin D, while an adequate fat intake when taking vitamin D ensures optimal absorption.

Getting enough vitamin D not only contributes to healthy bones and a strong immune system, but is also important for your dental health. Keep an eye on your vitamin D levels and your smile will thank you!
